watch charlotte oc's new video for 'shell' now
Following the overwhelmingly positive response to her Colour My Heart EP, British singer-songwriter Charlotte OC is ready to show off more than just her vocal chops. In her debut record Careless People, the songstress considers the consequences of destructive human behavior. In songs like "Medicine Man" and "Darkest Hour", Charlotte OC is especially candid about love--in it's finest, most grim and most desperate moments. The rest of the album follows suit with a series of emotional electro ballads and thoughtful acoustic serenades, filled with epic drum beats and echoes of the singer's capable, powerful vocals.
In the video for Careless People's "Shell" which premiered exclusively in V Magazine, Charlotte OC explores the complexities of a woman's identity--rejecting the sentiment of women being defined by stereotypes and generalizations. Throughout the video, the songstress embodies a series of placards, each labeled with a specific one dimensional trait--anger, seductive, strong and several others that are often used to diminish a woman's power. In V Magazine, Charlotte OC described the premise of the visuals as a representation of the way people lessen women into what is rather a "cartoon of what a woman is - or a kind of shell of who we are." The video is a telling reminder that women, and Charlotte OC herself, are multidimensional beings, each with their own remarkable stories to tell.
